Intense pine cones, red iron oxide, and manganese wash were layered generously into the saggar, and the fire answered with a deep, enveloping mahogany and burnt sienna. And then, at the lower body, everything breaks open. A band of white — almost violent in its contrast — erupts from beneath the darkness, and scattered across it like a constellation of blue stars are the marks of cobalt carbonate. Dark branching marks reach across the white like bare winter trees or lightning frozen mid-strike.\u003cbr\u003eThis is a cup about contrast. Dark and light. Earth and sky.
