Handmade porcelain cup, crafted through slip casting and saggar firing, textured using a Japanese technique of Kanna carving, then accentuated with a vitreous porcelain slip. During firing, the surface was enriched with copper wire, fine mesh, and airbrushed with washes of manganese dioxide and red iron oxide. Combustibles such as wood chips, grasses, pine cones, and lime leaves infused the porcelain with earthy fire-born markings.
The carved Kanna lines accentuate the vessel’s flow, guiding the eye through rich tonal shifts of warm browns, charred blacks, and occasional blue-green flashes. Each cup embodies the dialogue between control and unpredictability: fire sculpts the porcelain into a landscape of scorched textures and delicate veining.
The interior is finished with a smooth, food-safe satin glaze, while the exterior remains partially raw to preserve the natural alchemy of the firing. Warping or subtle irregularities may appear—traces of the cup’s passage through three firings, reminding us of the beauty in transformation and imperfection.
