Saggar-Fired Porcelain Cup – Desert Dusk (3)

Handmade porcelain cup, crafted through slip casting and saggar fired with copper wire, fine wire mesh, and layered with combustibles including wood chips, dried grasses, flowers, and lime leaves. During firing, these materials enriched the porcelain surface with atmospheric smoke markings and flame-patterned veils. Additional washes of red iron oxide, cobalt carbonate, and manganese dioxide created the deep gradation of tones — from glowing ember reds to shadowy blacks, with smoky browns and occasional green traces from copper fuming. The result is a landscape-like surface that recalls the shifting light of desert skies at dusk.

Each piece is one-of-a-kind — fire, minerals, and combustibles collaborate with porcelain to create layered surfaces of depth and unpredictability. The interior is finished with a smooth, food-safe satin glaze, providing a refined counterpoint to the raw, fire-marked exterior. Warping or subtle irregularities appear—traces of the cup’s passage through three firings, reminding us of the beauty in transformation and imperfection.
