Handmade porcelain cup, crafted through slip casting and saggar-fired with a combination of copper wire, fine wire mesh, and subtle wash layers of manganese dioxide and red iron oxide. During firing, the cup was enclosed in a saggar with combustibles such as wood chips, dried grasses and flowers, and pine cones. These materials interact with the porcelain body, leaving delicate imprints, smoky veils, and flashes of color across the surface.
This particular piece is distinguished by a molten band of fiery reds layered with deep blacks, reminiscent of a glowing horizon at twilight. Fine tendrils and smoky traces climb into the pale porcelain at the base, recording the unpredictable movement of flame and minerals in the kiln.
The interior is lined with a smooth satin glaze, ensuring a smooth, food-safe surface. The exterior remains unglazed, preserving the raw tactility and unique saggar markings that make each piece one of a kind. Warping may be visible, a quiet trace of the cup’s journey through three firings — a reminder of the beauty found in transformation and imperfection.
