Saggar-Fired Porcelain Cup – One-of-a-Kind Series (3)

Handmade porcelain cup, crafted through slip casting and saggar fired,  using a range of natural combustibles such as hemp wood chips, dried bananas, orange peels, carrots, and grasses. Each piece is wrapped with copper wire, which creates dark or green linings, and fine metal mesh, which leaves areas of deep brown coating. Additional color shifts are produced by cobalt carbonate (blue fumes) and manganese dioxide (black to brown tones).

These cups embrace the unpredictability of saggar firing — where humidity, the nature of combustibles, and the shifting dynamics of oxidation and reduction inside the kiln mean that no two pieces are ever alike. Some cups have been further enhanced with texturizing techniques, adding depth to their surfaces. The exterior is left raw, with subtle sheen emerging naturally from the interaction of metal oxides with porcelain, while the interior is lined with a smooth satin glaze, making each cup fully food safe. Warping may be visible, a quiet trace of the cup’s journey through three firings and a reminder of the beauty found in transformation and imperfection.

Each piece has gone through three firings to ensure durability. However, please handle with care to avoid thermal shock. Always warm the piece gradually—avoid pouring boiling water directly into a cold vessel. Although every piece has been tested for heat resistance, mindful use will help preserve its longevity.
