Saggar-Fired Porcelain Cup – Twilight Wave (4)

Handmade porcelain cup, crafted through slip casting and saggar firing, made from a modified porcelain body formulated by the artist  to vitrify at lower temperatures, enhancing fume retention during saggar firing. Wrapped in copper wire and fine metal mesh, the surface was washed and dusted with cobalt carbonate, while subtle browns emerged from touches of manganese dioxide. Fired with wood chips, dried grasses, and flowers, the result is a dynamic interplay of deep cobalt waves, earthy browns, and striking green tracery left behind by the copper wire.

A frit wash was applied to the raw porcelain exterior, producing a gentle sheen and light gloss that complements the fire-marked surface without obscuring its natural texture. This series evokes the movement of twilight skies over shifting waters, where cobalt blues dissolve into smoky whites and copper greens cut across the form like fleeting waves. This cup in the series has been further enhanced using the traditional Japanese Kanna carving technique, where the clay body is sliced and textured to create flowing ridges that accentuate the wave-like patterns. The interior is finished with a smooth satin glaze, ensuring the piece is fully food safe.

Each piece has gone through three firings to ensure durability. However, please handle with care to avoid thermal shock. Always warm the piece gradually—avoid pouring boiling water directly into a cold vessel. Although every piece has been tested for heat resistance, mindful use will help preserve its longevity.
