John Mac Signature Saggar Cup – Cobalt Earth

This is the most intentional cup in the series — and the most dramatic.
The upper body is consumed by darkness. Intense pine cones, red iron oxide, and manganese wash were layered generously into the saggar, and the fire answered with a deep, enveloping mahogany and burnt sienna. And then, at the lower body, everything breaks open. A band of white — almost violent in its contrast — erupts from beneath the darkness, and scattered across it like a constellation of blue stars are the marks of cobalt carbonate. Dark branching marks reach across the white like bare winter trees or lightning frozen mid-strike.
This is a cup about contrast. Dark and light. Earth and sky. Control and surrender.

Handmade in Limoges porcelain and fired multiple times. The exterior is completely unglazed. The interior is finished in a transparent satin glaze.
Combustibles: abundant pine cones, wood chips, dried grass, dried leaves, with wire mesh, copper wire, red iron oxide, manganese and cobalt carbonate.
